How the estimate works

Density equals total weight divided by total cubic feet, where cubic feet equals length times width times height divided by 1,728, multiplied by the piece count. The density is then matched to the NMFC density scale that took effect on July 19, 2025.

Worked example

Example: a single 48 by 40 by 48 inch pallet weighing 400 lb occupies 53.33 cubic feet, giving 7.50 lb/ft3, which falls in the 7 to 8 lb/ft3 bracket and classifies as Class 150.

Important limitation

This is the density-based class only. The July 19, 2025 NMFC overhaul moved most commodities to pure density, retired Class 77.5, and expanded the scale to 13 tiers, but some NMFC items still carry their own class regardless of density, and handling, stowability, or liability can override it. Below 6 lb/ft3 the scale gives a 200 to 500 band rather than a single class. Confirm the final class with your carrier or the NMFC listing before tendering.
